| Co-developing solutions for Europe’s protein value chains 📍 Vienna, Austria | 📅 20–21 November 2025 |
RefreSCAR is launching its first hackathon to bring together innovators, researchers, SMEs, practitioners, and policymakers in a dynamic two-day event. The challenge: design practical and scalable solutions to strengthen Europe’s protein value chains.
The RefreSCAR project, funded under Horizon Europe, supports the Standing Committee on Agricultural Research (SCAR) in its mission to provide strategic policy advice and drive forward research and innovation agendas.
The RefreSCAR Hackathon will create a collaborative platform where diverse actors join forces to address pressing challenges in protein value chains. From sustainability pressures to regulatory gaps and market barriers, participants will work side-by-side to propose solutions that can contribute to resilient and competitive European food systems.
Europe’s protein supply is at the crossroads of climate goals, food security needs, and innovation demands. Current barriers include:
To this end, the 1st RefreSCAR Hackathon invites a diverse set of actors such as post-graduate students, post-doctoral research fellows, researchers, small and medium enterprises, innovators, practitioners, policymakers and practitioners, food and feed producers/processors and other value chain actors (e.g. wholesalers, retailers, consumers) to pair their knowledge and expertise in order to co-develop local protein value chain blueprints, identify priority interventions, and propose scalable, context-specific solutions aimed at enhancing Europe's protein sector.
